Research Working Group Philosophy in Global Perspective

The processes of globalisation are increasingly putting not only our present but also our history in a changed light. As a result, the humanities are also under more pressure than ever to link their perspectives and research topics to the process of globalisation. Even more, there is a factual necessity to re-question and re-conceptualise our past, present and future in the horizon of comprehensive globalisation. Philosophy in particular must face these challenges critically and innovatively. For example, at the recent World Congress of Philosophy in Beijing, Arabic and Chinese were recognised as official languages alongside European ones. On the other hand, initiatives are emerging worldwide to make regional traditions of philosophising more visible and fruitful for global discourse. Likewise, the reception processes of Asian philosophies in the West, for example, as well as vice versa, should be taken into account. In this way, future forms of philosophising in a global perspective can be prepared with an open mind.

Reflecting on these current changes in the landscape of thought, which are also reflected in a new image of the history of global philosophy, is the core task of the working group "Philosophy in Global Perspective", which is to be implemented in the form of workshops, lectures and other formats of research. Through these activities, global perspectives of philosophy are to be advanced and made known within the German Philosophical Society. The structures of the American Philosophical Association (APA), which have been formed there for a good 20 years (Diversity and Inclusiveness Syllabus Collection), serve as a model for this.

Last but not least, the research activities are intended to help prepare the active participation of the DGPhil in the World Congress of Philosophy in Melbourne/Australia in 2023.

The research working group is linked to the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Hildesheim, the Reinhart Koselleck Project (DFG) "Histories of Philosophy in Global Perspective", and the Center for Global Studies at the University of Bern.
